The Genius of Charles Darwin is a three-part television documentary, written and presented by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins. As we approach the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin’s masterpiece, On the Origin of Species,Richard Dawkins presents the ultimate guide to Darwin and his revolutionary theory of evolution by natural selection which Dawkins considers the most important idea ever to occur to a human mind. In this powerful three-part polemical series, Dawkins explains who Charles Darwin was, how he developed his theory, what it is, and why it matters. He reveals how Darwin changed forever the way we see ourselves, the world and our place in it, and hopes to convince us that “evolution is a fact, backed by undeniable evidence”. In the first part of the series, Richard Dawkins retraces Darwin’s journey as a scientist. He re-examines the rich evidence of the natural world — iguanas on the Galapagos islands, giant fossilised sloths in the Americas and even pigeons back home in England — which opened Darwin’s eyes to the extraordinary truth that all living things must be related and had evolved from a common ancestor. Darwin knew his espousal of evolution would cause outrage, challenging, as it did, the prevailing religious view of the world and our place in it. But, as Dawkins explains, it was really his theory of natural selection that undermined the notion of a benevolent God who designed all creatures great and small

If Richard Dawkins came to my school (why he’d come to Kentucky is beyond me) I wouldn’t be asking these dumbass questions. I’d be in awestruck wonder, mouth agape, and probably squeeing quietly to myself. KIDS THESE DAYS…

Dawkins is adding to the dismal argument of evolution vs. God. They are NOT mutually exclusive. Belief in the literal interpretation of the old testament of the Christian Bible may be disproven by evolution, but that’s about it.

It’s rather slimy of Dawkins to allow his spiritual views to so permeate his scientific knowledge, and then try to convince others to disbelieve based on that. This is why he will ultimately fail.

I am also dismayed at Dawkins’ continued misuse of the word “proves” as it pertains to science.

Science can only disprove. It cannot “prove” anything. When one sets out with their hypothesis, they do it with the intention (through the scientific method) to DISPROVE it.

Dawkins even says that Darwin feared that some creature would be found that would disprove his hypothesis/theory. And that’s only one reason why Dawkins’ arrogance annoys me.

He’s woefully inaccurate on this point.

Evolution is documented fact. But for Dawkins to claim that it eradicates spiritual truth is arrogant folly. He may be able to disprove the literal translation of the book of Genesis (or of many other religions’ s myths) but that doesn’t then extend to disproving existence of God.

The myths that Dawkins so gleefully “disproves” were never scientific works. Science gives us the what, where, and how. Religion gives us the “why”.

    We need both.

What you believe is what you are brought up to believe. People are blindfolded for the truth.

I wouldnt be suprise if it was found that Darwinism is the reason why hiv and aids were created and injected in human beings.

It is worthless though. It’s stupid for people to say “even though there is proof i’m wrong, I was raised to believe something different so end of story”

@TheKenTerry Doesn’t mean you need to act like a pompous jackass and cut off little school girls mid-sentence cause you think what they have to say is worthless. Fuck you Dawkins.

He is a “douche bag” because nobody should be raised to believe in a bronze age book…end of story.

I believe totally and fully in evolution. However… Richard Dawkins you are a douche-bag. Why don’t people like Dawkins understand they are a product of the over zealous religious environment in which we live as are they creationist?

@Skindoggiedog As for including the future, what does the word “ever” mean in that context? He clearly says “to ever occur to a human mind” not “has occured”. What do you make of that, if not what I’ve made of it?

  15. FHomeBrew on March 29th, 2011 6:23 pm

@Skindoggiedog I’ll admit that my statement was a declaring one but I don’t think I’m wrong. I think the other idea’s I’ve mentioned are at least as powerful as the idea of evolution. They’ve just revolusionized other fields and far less publically because they’re not that controversial. Here’s what I meant by “It’s just an opinion” which I’ve just have backed up. Give me a measure of “powerful” and if I’ve been demonstrated evolution is indeed the most powerful I will admit that.

  16. Skindoggiedog on March 29th, 2011 6:37 pm

@FHomeBrew – It wasn’t Dawkins, nor myself, that made any absolute assertions. That was you.

“Evolution through natural selection is NOT the most powerful idea to ever occur”

The funniest part is that you said it with absolutely nothing in mind that would supersede it. Just .. DECLARED IT. It’s only since being challenged that you’ve made any kind of attempt to vindicate yourself, and failed miserably.

Don’t talk shit if you can’t back it up, and learn to admit when you’re wrong.

  17. Skindoggiedog on March 29th, 2011 7:18 pm

    @FHomeBrew – Congratulate yourself on a textbook-perfect goalpost-shift.

The core concept in dispute was not whether it was the most powerful, but whether he was referring to the future as well as the past. He obviously was not including the future, and this has been demonstrated.

    Simply put, you were wrong.

Unable to admit your mistake, you continue to flounder about desperately attempting to cling onto any pedantry that you can say you were right about.

  18. FHomeBrew on March 29th, 2011 7:53 pm

@Skindoggiedog Well not to be a cunt, but it’s just an opinion due to the word “powerful”. We all have different ideas about what that means unless we find a way to measure the power of ideas. Plus he’s using the disclaimer ‘perhaps’ within his statement. But this is not what we’re in about.
How about the concept of money? Or the invention of complex numbers, allowing for the existence of every peace of electronic technology today? I suppose those ideas are more powerful by measure of influence
