Why was the year 1876 (when the speech was given) significant?

The year 1876 was the centennial, (100th anniversary), of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia and the centennial of the United States.
Someone tried to rob Lincoln’s Tomb in Springfield, Illinois.
