Question by Whig Party: How can anyone that calls themselves a conservative possibly be against these quotes?
“[America] goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She is the champion and vindicator only of her own. She will commend the general cause by the countenance of her voice, and the benignant sympathy of her example. She well knows that by once enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication, in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy, and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standard of freedom.” ~John Quincy Adams, 6th president
“The great rule of conduct for us, in regard to foreign nations, is in
extending our commercial relations to have as little political
connection as possible… Why, by interweaving our destiny with that of
any part of Europe, entangle our peace and prosperity in the toils of
European ambition, rivalships, interest, humor, or caprice?… It is our
true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of
the foreign world.” ~ George Washington 1st president
“I am for free commerce with all nations, political connection with none, and little or no diplomatic establishment. And I am not for linking ourselves by new treaties with the quarrels of Europe, entering that field of slaughter to preserve their balance, or joining in the confederacy of Kings to war against the principles of liberty.” ~ Thomas Jefferson
“Peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations–entangling alliances with none, I deem [one of] the essential principles of our government, and consequently [one of] those which ought to shape its administration.” ~Thomas Jefferson
“Allow the president to invade a neighboring nation, whenever he shall deem it necessary to repel an invasion, and you allow him to do so whenever he may choose to say he deems it necessary for such a purpose—and you allow him to make war at pleasure.” ~ Abraham Lincoln
“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter, and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” ~ Abraham Lincoln
“Preparation for war is a constant stimulus to suspicion and ill will.” ~ James Monroe
So, what are these “conservatives” actually trying to conserve? I see these “conservatives” as a group of people with no respect for the wishes of our founding fathers or our other rulers wishes? Neocons are fake conservatives.
Snippets? These are in full context. Including the preceding sentences and latter sentences surrounding the points. I’m 100% positive this is how these guys though. I have read letters and pamphlets and publications by these guys in the droves. I’m positive, especially Jefferson, that this is how they thought.
